After initial experience in industry and with CSIRO, Robert joined and qualified as a patent attorney with a small Melbourne patent attorney firm. He then gained experience with a major London based patent attorney firm and qualified as a British patent attorney. On returning to Australia, he joined a large Melbourne-based firm of patent attorneys that has grown to become a top tier IP firm. With that firm, he was admitted to partnership and became recognised as one of that firm’s most senior and experienced patent attorneys. In the mid-1990s, Robert relocated to Sydney for four years, to enable the firm’s Sydney office to be established. Following restructuring of the firm, he served as a Board Member for several years. On leaving that firm in 2014, Robert joined EKM Patent as Consultant Patent Attorney.
Throughout his professional life Robert has been actively involved in training of young professionals seeking a career as a patent attorney. As a partner of the Melbourne-based firm, he conducted courses for many years on industrial design law and in the industrial property law of countries other than Australia, design law of Australia industrial design/copyright provisions, as part of an in-house team of partners of the firm covering all subjects required for qualification as an Australian patent attorney. As a Fellow of the Academy of Education established by the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia, and accredited by the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys, Robert served for several years one of the lecturers and examiners for the subject of Drafting Patent Specifications.
In his down time Rob is working on developing a golfing capability, is an avid collector of wine and appreciates the finer things in life such as good food, cinema and his beautiful wife (and her cats).
